Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Being a single girl Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. While working two job opportunities, Scott took classes in secondary teaching in Temple University. She hoped to be a English teacher in high school. She had a dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, ended when she dropped out of high school. Her career began by performing live poems and her own work. She eventually joined forces together with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. The singer performed at a Roots performance. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Additionally, she gained experience as an actor during the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
